upper rear shock mount bar question

1 Attachment(s)
Hello,

I'm in the process of installing a triangulated 4 link on my 48 Chevy. For the upper rear shock mount bar I was hoping to repurpose either a solid steel bar that came off my truck (pic attached), or an old barbell I had in my basement.

I'm not really sure what it's old purpose was as it was not connected to anything on the frame.

Does anyone with more experience see any issues with using either of these items?

Thanks,

-A

looks like it's a sway bar..

Just keep in mind, if you use coilover shocks the entire (rear) weight of the car is handled by whatever you use for the mount bar.

I'd use a piece of rectangular mild steel tubing instead of trying to use a sway bar. Couldn't cost $20 for what you need. If you decide to weld on the sway bar be sure the welds are done right. At least for use as a sway bar the welds are critical, and to be avoided if at all possible. Might not be such an issue using a sway bar as a cross member, but still... just saying.

I wouldn't use round stock unless the quality is known.

cobalt327, If I were to use a piece of rectangular stock would you weld shock tabs onto it or drill holes through the bar?

Thanks.

If your top shock mount is a single pin I'd weld in a boxed plate with a hole on the top tab. If it's a crossbolt, I;d weld a pair of tabs to the tubular crossmember, and drill for a crossbolt. I wouldn't bolt through the tubing, or drill the tubing, as it will weaken the tube.

Unless you were going way overkill on the size/wall thickness I'd weld.
