Urgent help 700r4

Hi guys, I'm trying to get racing tonight, having problems though....

I have a new torque converter. 700r4, 10 inch, non-lockup.

It is fine in park, when I put it in any gear it's like it's fully engaged and stalls the engine. It feels like dropping the clutch.

The transmission worked fine before putting this new converter in.

Any help is appreciated.

dh

It's in a g-body, but I believe the trans is a 87 from some other donor.

The transmission has a kit in it for a non lockup. It was working fine with the old converter. I had the same shop build me the new converter.

Is it possible that the new converter is defective?

The only thing I'm not sure of is the square electrical plug on the side of the tranny. Is this required? I can't remember if anything was connected when we removed the tranny (several months ago). I can't see any wires for it, so I'm thinking I've never used it.

It is possible that you have a lockup converter. If it is it should only engage in 3rd or 4th gear and then disengage during shift down or when the brake is applied. That is what the plug on the trans is for. I would think that if it is unplugged that it would not lock up. Are you sure that the converter was seated all the way before bolting the trans to the engine?? You can check it by unbolting the converter from the ring gear and see if it will move. If it does not you could have bigger problems.

Thanks for the reply.

The converter is supposed to be a non-lockup. I'm pretty sure it was seated all the way. I'm pretty careful about these things.

When I unbolt it now it will spin.

I guess it's gotta come out and I'm not getting to the track today.

Has anybody had a new converter fail at startup? Maybe the converter failed or the pump failed?

IF the converter is lock up design ...... IF the shop gave you the wrong converter.

With the 'non' lock up kit installed in the pump... the converter clutch is applied from oil flow into the converter as soon as the engine is started

This will cause the trans to kill the motor as soon as you select a gear forward or reverse

This is exactly what happened. I took the converter back to the shop today. They cut it open and everything was fine on the inside. However, it was a lockup converter instead of the non-lockup it was supposed to be. So now they're making a new non lockup.
Quite a hassle, but at least it should be ready for racing this weekend. Thanks again for the replies.
