using Interior dye

I had a couple of questions about using interior dye.

1. When applying the light colored dye to Dark plastic pieces does the surface have to be primed ?

2. When the dye is applied to higher traffic areas such as door panels do you spray a clear coat over the dye to prevent it from being rubbed off ?

As always, Thanks for the help

i used to be in the trim business and have changed colors many times. first no matter what dye you use eventually it will wear off on high use panels. we used to recover known trouble spots in the correct material and dye the rest of the pieces. use the best dye , we used MarHyde, clean everything with a scrub brush and enamel reducer or prep sol, use a vinyl primer or neutral color (medium gray) for the first coat,make sure you get into seams and under welting, then give each piece three medium coats let dry for as long as possible then re install. we never used clear but it is an option, we were not sure on the yellowing problem that clears sometimes have.
