V6 car tach vs V8 car tach problems

I have a 1980 el camino. and the vin # said it came from the factory stock with a v6. I now have a v8 in the car, but i do not know if the tach is correct, some of the parts are from a 305 car.

the redline on the tach starts at 4000 rpm, but the numbers go all the way to 6000. i don't have another tach to test it with right now, but i was just curious if anyone would know if this 4000 rpm redline was for the v6 or the v8 or used in both and i can only test with another tach?

I don't know of any V-8 that red lines at 4,000rpm or even a V-6.

My '95 K1500 w/ 305 V8 has a tach that has the redline at 4k, but goes to 5,500. both V6 and V8 probably have a 4k redline, as a 4.3 is just a 350 missing 2 cyls

You sure it's not orange from 4-5,000 and then red beyond that? Wow, I'm going to have to look in some GM's and see for myself.

all orange with no red.. the truck has 3.42 gears, and cruises at 1,500.. it can do 60 in 3rd at like 3,500 RPM, cruises at 70 MPH @ 2k in 5th.. theres no reason the truck needs to go over 4k RPM

All orange is not red line. It's suggested max rpm limit. It's all about economy now day's and the orange starting at 4,000rpm would be recommended shift point being that the power range goes away at 4 grand. Try next time you drive it, mash the gas and see what rpm it shifts into second gear with the selector in D.

there is no D with a 5spd .. The shift light comes on all the time, but giving just a bit of gas makes it go out

Oh, didn't know you have a 5sp man. Whole different ball game there. The 700r4 has a shift light also on the computer controlled engine that comes on when the torque converter locks up. It's drove me nuts on my F-bird till I figured it out.
