V8 Midget
My name is Mike and I have a rather unusual project. I have a rust free 77' MG Midget that I plan to install a ford 302 with a T5 five speed. My problem is that I need a more sturdy front end and brake set up to allow for the extra weight and power. Can a Mustang II front end be narrowed to a 44 inch track width?

I have zero experience with that one beyond a few hours of gazing at an MG and an Olds 215 sitting in a garage next to each other, but, just to throw out a few casual thoughts....

I'd bet the pinch point is going to be at the upper-a-arm inner mounts. Narrowing a Mustang II front would probably mean shortening the lower a-arms to keep a inner pivot dimension to work with the steering rack and then as the uppers are already pretty short, you'd be moving them inward as-is, but then those and the cylinder heads would be trying to occupy the same space.

I'd place my bet on fabbing from scratch starting with the narrowest rack you can find, and using McPherson struts. Upper mounts for that would get weird but I don't think anything else would fit.

One of the issues is the length of the engine compartment so you may need to stretch the wheelbase..I have been working on the installtion of a V-8 in a triumph spitfire and wound up biting it and making the chassis longer and wider and will wind up with big fender flares to cover the tires..Up to you as to how to proceed with this..

I am thinking a hot Ford V6 may be the best way to go being the Ford V6 is also a 90 degree as I remember making it very narrow. And I imagine you can get a lot of oats out of one.

Midget with 302
Thanks for all of your replies. The reason I wanted to go with a "Mustang II" style front end is because of the self contained nature of the set up and because of parts availability. I've seen other Midget projects with a 302 and understand that I will probably have to cut out the transmission tunnel and fabricate another one. I know the motor will fit without lengthening the chassis. Its the brakes, coil springs and shocks that concern me, the stock set up is just not up to the task. For the rear I had planned on going with a 9 inch Ford with a 4 link set up. My plan is for this car to look absolutely stock on the outside except for the roll bar. Oh, and it WILL sound scarey!
