vaccum line? or something else?

i have a 2.5L iron duke, with the distributor under the side moutned intake manifold... i saw a black (looked like vaccum line, or wire) with a reddish colored cone on the end. Its hard to reach, and i couldnt see if it had a plug, or a little filter in the end, i just changed my head so i kinda moved everything around, it could have definetly came unplugged. There is also no Tach reading... sounds to me like it came unplugged.....

What is the best way to make sure your plug wires arent crossed? i just used the way of bringing a cylinder to TDC, and looking at where the dist rotor is pointing to, sounds like the only way, any better ones?

Thanks everyone

I don't know what a 2.5L iron duke is, but just go through the wires in firing order to see if they are all on the right cyl.
