Are vacuum advance canisters for HEI distributors universal in their fit and operation? Prices certainly vary from different manufactures. I have a Mallory HEI distributor that I feel the adjustable vacuum canister is faulty and causing erratic behavior and I’d like to replace it. I have a stock GM HEI distributor kicking around that I could take the non-adjustable canister from and put it on the Mallory. Will it fit?

I was tinkering with the GM one still on the distributor and I was surprised at how much effort it took to make the shaft in the canister move. The springs seemed pretty strong and for just engine vacuum to make that move, wow.

They'll pretty much all interchange but not all will give the same amount of advance. So get yourself an accel adjustable. You'll be glad in the long run

Pardon my French...but I wouldn't buy CHIT from Accel...anymore. SUX, have you thought about googleing the part? or in fact maybe calling Mallory? I just did, took about 20 secs to find it @ www.summitracing.com. Summit #MAA-29331, $25

True, I can find the Mallory replacement. Just trying to save a few more dollars.

Just read the description again of the part number you listed and I see that it comes with advance weights, limiting bushings etc. That actually makes it more than worth it! I'll have to see if the local parts houses can get it too. Thanks.

Oy, here come the discrepancies again. Check out what Summit describes:

Then their Ebay ad says the same thing yet when I read a little further down:

One thing I've learned about most things you do is that companies cannot be written off entirely for one bad item. I got their coil and vac cannister just ticking away

They charge a 19$ ship and handling on each order whether its 20$ or 2000$. But the bonus part is their wearhouses are in canada too, so you get stuff fast and already duty paid. The 19$ sounds steep. Just wait till you hear what they want to ship cross border bro

Thanks for the info. Luckily, I live close enough to the border that I can drive over to the US at lunch and pick up parts at a mailbox place and then drive back over.

I took off the GM HEI canister last night. Was simple enough with a flat screwdriver to move the canister rod out of the pivot hole. Now I just have to do the same but on the Mallory while installed in the truck. I sure I don't drop any of those little screws!
