valve noise

I have valve noise. The car car runs grate and has had it since I rebuilt the motor. It sounds like a rocker but have adjusted 15-20 times. Changed out header gaskets. Do you think I have bad roller rockers?

Valve chatter

Hi, Tom here, have 28 years exp. as a tech. It is possible you have a 1 or more bad valve guides. I have run into this problem before and they will give you the same noise as a misadjusted rocker. Assuming you have a hydraulic cam, this is what I would look for. If possible, run engine with valve cover off on bank that is noisey. It will be messy, but some times you have to in order to find the problem. With a rag in hand, press against the side of the spring and hold pressure. If you find the noise goes away, bad valve guide. Hope I was of help, Hotrodhill.

If you are using a stock mechanical fuel pump, they can make a similar noise of a lifter and still work ok. As I remember it was the spring on lever that went bad. May be the time for the broom-stick on pump trick. Noise will travel all over. Let it idle and put a broom stick on the pump hopefully you will hear the noise there. Cheap and quick fix.

Did you check your pushrod lenth, if they are to short it will cause the rocker to contact the spring retainer causing noise. Also some rollers are just plain noisy.
