valve spring diameters

Does anyone know what would be the stock valve spring diameter for a set of 80's 305 truck heads, and about how large of a diameter spring do you think they could accomodate? I have heard that 1.25" springs are easy to find, but I'm seeing a lot of 1.265" springs out there... How big can I go safely before I have to have the heads modified? Thanks!

1.265 will fit. About $40 for a Z28 type spring. I would guess 1.55 would be the biggest single spring to fit.

Johnson has you on the right direction. 1.5" is about the largest you can go on stock heads without running into problems. OEM springs will be around 1.255 to 1.265.
