Valve spring retaining rings needed?

My fuelies, as do most stock heads, had rings around the top of the valve springs. I replaced the springs with a set of z28 springs that came with springs, retainers, and locks but no rings. Are these needed or not? I did not think they were needed but then got the heads together and it looks like the springs move around without the rings.

I have seen many heads without these rings but most stock ones have them. Are they needed or not?

Those are oil shields, they help keep oil off the stem. Not neccessary. If you want to use them be sure to recheck your installed closed spring pressure because they're about .030" thick. May not make enough difference to have to make an adjustment.
