valve springs seats or shims???

I'm ordering all of the parts for a cam change on my 454. I am ordering the Edelbrock RPM cam, Edelbrock valve springs and retainers, and a new timing chain, and of course all the gaskets to put it all back together.

Here is my question, the guy helping me out says I need to buy shims for my new springs??? Does anybody know if this is true and if so, what size? I also saw valve spring seats, do I need these too??

Man, this is getting a lot more expensive than I planned.

re: valve springs seats or shims???

You will need shims to properly set up the valve springs. If your heads have ex. valve rotators, you will need to replace them with ex. spring cups (Comp Cams and others have them). You will need to check your valve spring installed height before you order the springs because some 454 heads use a shorter installed height (1.800" vs. 1.880").
1.880" is the normall installed height.

re: valve springs seats or shims???

Will just putting on 1.7 rockers give me more horsepower if I don't do the cam right now??? This whole valve thing is confusing the hell out of me. LOL

All 454s and other BBCs have 1.7 rockers.
