valve tapping???? 69 chev malibu 307

recently when i went to start my car there was some knocking that went away pretty quick after i was cranking the starter, then i noticed it was randomly knocking while running... but goes away when i excelerate... (i thought it would get louder but it seems to go away) so i took off the valve covers and tried to tighten any that seemed loose and i also think i found out which one was knocking by disconecting the spark plug to it. Anyhow I've taken off the covers and tightened the valves quite a few times trying to take care of the tapp and although it';s better it's still randomly tapping.... Just wondering if anyone has any ideas and also wanted to ask.. should there be any play in how tight the top peice is? I hate to sound amature but the little scoup type thing.. should i be able to move it at all or should i tighten it down solid?? thanks

It could be a rod bearing bad and the piston hitting on the head or a broken piston, both would cause noise. Have an experianced mechanic listen to it!

If you are talking about the rocker arm it depends on what type it is.

If you tighten it down solid you will damage your engine for sure.
