valve float is when you over rev the engine, the valve spring doesn`t have enough pressure to open and close the valve, the valve stays open in the time duration of a engine revolution, this can result in the valves kissing the piston or pistons, depending on how many floated and then the head will have to come off as will the pistons. another term for this is called "out running the cam" I`ve floated the valve`s a few times and got lucky nothing hit anything, but it would be wise to check the valve train as well as do a compression check.

Valve float is sometimes caused by hydraulic lifter "pump-up" which is the point when the hydraulic valving in the lifter is not able to bleed off rapidly enough, causing the lifter body to "pump-up" and in turn holding the valves off of their seats.
