Vapor canister?s

I removed the vapor canister from my 78TA and took out the filter from the bottom. There was very little charcoal inside. How can I test the canister to see if it still works? If I can use it how much charcoal do you put inside? Is there a way to just eliminate the canister? My friendís 68 Firebird has no canister and no smell of gas so I donít see why I need to keep it. Thanks for any help.

I saw you over at PY asking the same question and I almost answered, but I thought the answers that were given were enough to bolster a decision.
Personally If I still had a garage to park mine in, I would have an EVAP system on it. I dont like fumes in the garage. i just dont like breathing the stuff.
It doesnt affect performance either, as was stated earlier.Just keeps the air inside and outside cleaner.
Chances are the carbon is not going to work well being aged and probably contaminated for so long. Put on a new canister and check the control part to be sure it is working. Probably can find one at rock auto or other online parts store for cheap.
