variable speed 4 1/2" angle grinder
Does such a thing exist? Sometimes I'm doing some operation and wish the thing were a little less aggressive. Has anyone modified one to spin a slower speed? The thing has brushes in it. It is just a DC motor like an electric drill motor, isn't it? Would it hurt anything to run it on a variac? An AC motor wouldn't tolerate that, but would it hurt a DC motor? My angle grinder is rated at 6.4A and I have a variac rated to handle 7.5A.

I used one of these with a 7.5 AMP angle grinder, you can catch them on sale regularly for about $12
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=43060 It works really good to control the speed down to an RPM range too slow to even grind with but be warned it also cuts down on the power.
