Various carb problems

My brother '66 catalina 389 with a carter 4-barrel was having some carb. problems and I decided to take the carb off and take it apart to see what the problem was. We had bought it off of eBay and was told it had been rebuilt, it had been rebuilt but I don't think it was done correctly. anyway, the person that rebuilt it stripped part of one of the secondary jets off and I don't know if there's a trick I could use to get it out. Also when I had rebuilt my edelbrock 600cfm performer it had a little steel ball under the accelerator pump jets that this didn't have, is it because it's a Carter that it doesn't have it? I've got a Carter performance book that has a rebuild section and see if it has anything about it. And last but not least the reason I took the carb. off in the first place, the idle mixture screws don't work. Any suggestions on any of these problems?

The only thing I can think of about the broken jet is to carefully drill a larger hole and try an easy-out. Maybe someone else has a suggestion.

My Carter book doesn't show any ball under the accelerator pump for either the AWS or the AFB.

It sounds as though the "rebuilder" didn't clean the carb thoroughly and there may be junk in the primary circuit passages. That would account for the lack of adjustment. I'd break it down and make sure all the passages are clear with air.

well, I rebuilt it and it still didn't work so I took the edelbrock 600cfm off of my car (it's just sitting) and put it on his and it runs fine now so we are going to be getting rid of the carter.
