Vega rear

I have a '74 Vega, I'm trying to find out what kind of rear axle it has, It has 11 bolts, Torque arm, panhard bar, and torsion bars, Like the setup on F-bodies.

It's '74 Vega Panel Wagon, 10-bolt, but with torque arm, torsion bars, and panhard bar, Like a F-body?

The '74 and newer Vega has the torque arm suspension stock, pretty much the same as the Monza has, only the '71-73 Vega's have the 4-link type. Yours also has the typical weak 7.5" 10-bolt stock.

Using the torque arm set-up, What would be the cheapest way to make it stronger? We are on a budget! Thank You

Does the torque arm bolt up exactly like the 3rd and 4th gen Camaro rear end? If it does then narrow a '90 or later Camaro 7 5/8 rear end to fit the Vega. The '90 and later 7 5/8 has 28 spline axles, better differential and usually nice PBR disc brakes that you might want to use.

How much power do you intend to put to it, and how good are you going to try to hook it to the pavement??

Big Gear head has given you some idea with the later F-car rear but it will be a problem over 400hp if you try to hook it on slicks. A 9" Ford, 8.8" Ford, 8.5" GM 10-bolt, Jeep Dana 44 would all require custom fabrication for the torque arm mount and narrowing to install but are much stronger.

A really cheap upgrade would be 88-newer S-10 28 spline axles and corresponding 28 spline posi or mini spool (depending on your intended use) into the stock 7.5" housing, figure 350hp to be its limit.

Would the S-10 axles fit the axle housing that is already on the Vega and use the torque arm set-up? The car will have somewhere between 3 to 400 horse, any more would look at 8.8 Ford rear. Thank You for your time.

I think it will, from what I have heard, but verify this elsewhere rather than take my word for it. I have two Vega's but both don't have the stock suspension or rear axle any more, I knew better than to try and use that weak stuff.

Try asking at the H-body forum, they are more into stock suspension than I am. Mine both have 8.5" rears in them, one is drag race 4-link and one is modified truck-arm style.
