vega Steering Shaft Removal

Hi all. I'm trying to remove my steering shaft to install a set of Sanderson Headers (the shaft needs to run through the #1 and #3 tubes). I unbolted the bottom u-joint and tried to slide it up off the steering box splines. After a few minutes of gently pushing up the shaft I figured- either something is wrong or I need a bigger hammer.

it looks like this:

any advise?

thats just a picture from the internet. Is the shaft supposed to "telescope" or is that what the rubber boot looking is for?

I know this is a noob thing but better safe than sorry...

vega box

look close at the splined shaft coming out of the box,you will see a place where it is thinner??thats where the bolt that holds the steering shaft to the box goes thru, locking box and shaft together. remove the bolt all the way.put a big screwdriver or small pry bar, between box and shaft, and pry it off. only use heat AS A LAST RESORT.,,or you will be replacing the seal you MAY have to unbolt steering column from the firewall.

Take the bolt all the way out.
Use a small pry bar if needed to seperate the joint from the shaft.
Don't use any heat.

Hi, I thought I would do a follow up for other people with Vega's. I had to loosen up the steering column from inside. The coupling did not provide enough flex. The telescoping feature of the shaft was my second option since you need to drill out the plastic security tabs, then somehow make new ones with a glue gun or something. So, there you go. thanks for the help.
