Vin number wrong or missing

I have a 64 Fairlane that has the front frame and inter sheet metal removed from the fire wall forward and replaced with new 2by3 frame rails. The vin numbers were on the sheet metal that has been removed and I do no have the old metal. There is a door tag on the door and the vin on the door tag does not match. Then vin on the car and the vin on the title has 2 digits different. The 2nd and the 4th digit do not match. What can I do about this?

The ONLY legal way to do this is to go to your local DMV or State Trooper office and give the info you have. This could be a totally legit problem or the car could be a stolen veh. Believe me as a retired cop you don't want to screw around with bad VIN numbers....get it fixed pronto.

that's the problem.. doors can easilly be swapped, so that Vin number can easilly be changed. the Vins that have been cut off the car with the sheet metal cannot be... what I would do is verify the car ( VIN ) has not been stolen, and then go thru a lost title prosess.. unless a cop is really picky, they should go ahead and verify the door vin, as they probably would not know that the vin was also inside the fenders..

I went to the title office here in my state and they said that I have to go to the state the car is from and have them try and find out what happened that the numbers don't match. They said it seams odd that two cars could have the same numbers but the 2nd and 4th number. These brake down as the build plant and the body type. The 2nd digit on the title is a f shows the car being built in Detrolt MI and the door tag shows the letter K and that is the Kanas plant. Then the 4th number on the title is a 4. The 3&4th didgit go to gather to show the body type making the title showing 44 and the door showing 47. The best I can find out is that 47 stands for a Fairlane sport coupe and there is no number 44 body type in 64.
I have sent a email to the other state to see if they can look back at the last two title tranfers to see if there has been a typo mistake or something. I have not heard back from them so I guess I will wait and see.
