vin numbers on a 57 chevy
I just bought a 57 chevy Convertable with out a vin tag on it. I have heard of the vin number being stamped on the frame. I have looked every where and can't find them. Can anyone tell me the exact location on the frame to get these numbers.

No VIN numbers as we know them today are on your 57 Chevy. There was an aluminum data plate riveted to the firewall that had a serial number amongest the rest of the data. It probably has been removed/painted over in the past 48 years. The paper work (title) should contain this serial number. You can contact some of the big TRI 5 parts vendors and get a blank data plate and stamp the numbers in your title and affix to the firewall.

If it's still there, the vin plate on your 57 chevy will be right by where the upper door hinge pivots, on the driver's side. I just looked for one on a friend's 57 hardtop and there it was!

Thank you guys, on one hand I know that the little stainless steel plate by the dorr is the vin number, but on the other hand there isn't one there nor is there a title that goes along with this car so now where do we go.

Uuh-ohoo. Not good. Do you have a bill of sale? Right now it is getting very tight filing for lost/abandoned vehicle titles. It is my understanding that the Alabama gang that was pumping out titles like popcorn is in a world of hurt. The word circulating around the big Charlotte Auto Fair at Lowe's motor speedway was titles were being looked at by the title cops. All dealers had to complete all their transactions under the watchful eye of State Vehicle Registration people. Individuals were still on their own but.....
