VIN 'reading' not really decoding

Just was wondering if anybody knew of any website/company that would 'read' a VIN number rather than just decode it.

Maybe im answering my own question here, but oh well.... I want to just call X company and say the VIN # is 123, what did the car come with when it was bought from the dealer?

All decoding it would do, is tell me what it left the factory with, I was curious to know what it left the dealer with. Build codes dont always reveal everything ethier as they are more factory oriented.

The VIN code IS what the factory puts on it. So if you read and not decode it you will just see a bunch of # and Letters.
Anything that was installed at the dealer after it left the factory will not have anything to do with the VIN, you will need to find the original dealer invoice for that.
The X company will tell you the exact same thing as it would if you were to decode it. Installing VIN plates and assigning certain parts to the car(VIN) is one of my jobs at the place I work.
Sorry if I wasn't much help.
Later,
WEIMER

You might try www.greatoldcars.com for decoading from the factory,, but I would have to agree with Weimer about something that was installed by the dealer, good luck Bill

Thats why I put 'read' in quotes, because I didnt mean acutally read it, I just used it for lack of a better word.

I Know the factory puts the VIN on it.

Maybe you guys misunderstood my question.

BASED on the VIN, there should be a company that would be able to look up the VIN #, and see the dealer invoice, which I guess would be a better discription of what Im looking for.

I know those companies exist, I've seen them around before, I just cant think of them.
IE Pontiac Historical Society, would have that kind of information on cars that were registered with them, by thier owners.

Or you could just see if you can find the build sheet with all the RPO codes on it.

I contacted General Motors archives in Dearborn, MI. with my VIN# and my name, address, phone#, & e-mail, and what I requested.

I asked for a copy of the microfiche record of the original window sticker that was adhered to my car from the original selling dealer back in 1981.
I also asked for the same thing for my 1982 C-10.
Almost three months later I get a standard envelope in the mail from them containing both copies, which turned out to be a good thing since the one for my car had the original printed type out of focus while the typed information was clearly legible.
The copy of the document for the C-10 had all information legible, which happened to be the exact same pre-printed window sticker used the previous year making everything easy to understand and read.

Most places charge for this type of service, and GM archives has stated that if the amount of documents exceeds more than two or three per address per time, they will be required to charge for their services.

almost exactly what I was looking for... although, if the buyer of the car wanted additional dealer installed options after the window sticker was printed... the original sticker placed on the car would no longer be correct, so would they have printed a new sticker just so it could be given to the original customer after the car was purchased?

I've found the build sheet for the car, however dealer installed options dont always have an RPO code. Only example I can think of at the moment would be a dealer name-tag sticker. IE yenko chevrolet

I know I have the address, as I still have the envelope they sent the copies in.
I will have to get it tonight when I go out to the car for clean-up and prep work for tomorrows car show.

I'll PM you the info before I go to work tonight.
