Vintage Sun Dwell Tach

First time on this board. Hope someone can help out.

Can someone help me with getting a Sun Dwell Tach Tester Model GA 38516 working so I can use it on an early 1980-vintage Chevy engine with breaker point ignition? I have talked to Roger Kunz who is not able to help me. The tester has a rubber stamp of 53-10-5 on the inside of the case. My father-in-law gave me the tester, but I am having difficulty in getting it to work. Having used this same unit and others in the 60s and 70s on various engines, I thought I remembered how to operate it, but am not sure now. When I hooked it up to the boat, I was unable to read dwell and the tachometer needle vibrated, more so at low rpm, and did not indicate the correct rpm-at least when compared to the dashboard mounted VDO tach. I have yet to spray the rotary switch contacts and the variable resistor (Dwell Regulator) with any contact cleaner, but will if I need to. Is it possible that the capacitors in the tester need to be replaced? That is about the only thing that I can think of that might be affected by age.

Here is a picture of another unit that looks like the one I have.

I would like to know if anyone has a copy of the operating manual for this tester or another tester that might have a similar operation sequence. Like I said, I thought I knew how to work it, but may not be doing it correctly. Incidentally, I do have a May 1955 Sun Service Equipment Test Specification book that is actually in pretty good condition.

I appreciate any help you can give me.

Have you tried to contact Sun Instruments? There was someone on the board a while back with a Sun Distributor tester with basicly the same problem and if I remember correctly they not only had manuals but replacement parts also..
