i hooked up a volt gauge with the hot wire going to a switched terminal on the fuse panel and the black wire grounded is this correct? also should the gauge
show a steady 12 volts when running? 2nd question, my fuel was working
good then it started going to full when i turned the switch on. is this a
ground problem? my car is a 1966 buick skylark convertible .
thank you to all who reply!

Sounds like you connected the volt gauge properly. Your voltage sounds low, when running you should be in the 14 volt range.
Your fuel gauge is is either a bad sender or bad wiring most likely.
