Is it a knock or a tick? A tick at startup is usually a lifter, the roller lifters installed in these engines are prone to startup tick, sometimes it goes away after warmup, sometimes it don`t. Get a can of seafoam from your local parts store, pour it in the oil, start the engine and let it idle for about 20 minutes, change the oil and filter. This usually eliminates lifter tick.
This is my guess being it`s common and you say it sounds as if it`s coming from the top end.

does it go away after its hot? If so its most surely piston slap. GM uses very short skirts on their pistons to cut down on friction and it shows up as piston slap. Its not a big deal. My LT1 has had noticable slap since 60k and I'm over 100k now. I'm leaving for a 10,000 mile summer road trip and I have no doubts that its fine.

It sounds bad, but (if it is piston slap) don't worry about it unless it starts rapidly changing for the worse
