This is not a Vortec engine, its just a throttle body 5.7 or 5.0 V8. The cylinder heads are known as swirl port heads, and yes they are junk for performance engines. They stop making power at around 5000-5200 or so RPM's. The vortec heads that you are asking about are a good replacement head for the swirl port heads. I would suggest that you use the engine block and buy an aftermarket set of heads. The engine block should be set up for a roller cam and 1 piece rear main seal.

The main part of the "vortec" head design is just the heart shaped combustion chamber that is on about all aftermarket heads, afr included. So you are making a vortec engine, as gm calls it. It is a high quench design that promotes a faster burn rate so it requires less total ignition timing, so more compression ratio or less octane can be used as compared to the "old school" heads.
The gm vortec head has a different intake bolt angle and requires a special vortec intake manifold. It also requires special rockers and valve covers. A good set of heads but the non-standard intake, center bolt valve covers, and narrow body rockers make the vortec heads a pain in the butt to use if you are already set up with the old style stuff. |
