vortec head modification for .480 lift

Yes I have searched all over and I don't know what needs to be done to clear a .480 lift cam. Idk what that would cost either, so maybe some guesses? Thanks these are going on my 400 sbc.

CLICK for info on Vortec heads and mods to them, etc.

Comp and other cam mfg'ers have "beehive" springs that don't require machining. Some others have posted that some GM 6 cyl engines built now have beehive springs and those will work also.

Okay. I have read that some people are installing comp cams 249-981-16 springs with different retainers and are having good luck with more clearance with out trimming the guides. Wondering if this was true?? Thanks for the link

26915 or 26918 Beehive springs with 787-16 Beehive retainers for over 0.525" lift on stock L31 heads.

Why wouldn't it be true? They even reference a part number and you wonder if it is true. Hmm.

I don't know why I said that. Must have had the mind going on something. Those comp cam springs I mentioned i know will drop right in, but I was wondering about retainers that would give extra lift clearance. Like maybe low pro retainers. I have seen all the chats about the retainers that give extra clearance I just haven't had any luck finding them. Also I have seen the ghetto grind article. How exactly would you accurately shave off 3/32" from the retainer if I were to keep the stock retainers? Thanks for the input guys.

More drop in Beehive info for Vortec 4.3/305/350 for extra lift.

I'd rather use a Beehive than the 981. The Beehives smaller retainer is lighter, and acts like a lighter retainer without the cost. The Beehive springs arent the cheapest although teh 2002-2004 LS6 springs are pretty cheap.

Theres a ton of info in this thread along with pics and caliper measurements of how much clearance you can get.

Looks like about 0.560" lift with stock L31 heads with 787-16 retainers and 638 locks.

Never tried this, but someone said the solution is to remove the factory posi lock valve seal and replace with an '86 Daytona 2.2L turbo umbrella style valve seal. Supposed to allow for over 0.500" lift...

Readily available on the internet?

cobalt327 09-26-2011 05:14 PM

What, the seals? I guess- try Rock Auto.

So would those sit right on without it any need for modification to the valve guides?

That's supposed to be the deal, but research this first. It's from the 'net, I have no idea if it's valid.

Okay thanks. Well, I'm open to researching stuff so I'll do plenty of that and get back to ya on that. Maybe what you have told me could be another great way to increase lift capacity higher. Offf to the net!

Are the Dodge omni and the dodge daytona like the same thing because when I look up the number I only really find omni seals. If so they are like $2.29 @ O'Reilly's. Not to bad I think.
