The bowl & stem guide are all that needs work on the Vortec. The runners are as good as they get and porting there can hurt flow. Do a search here or google and I'm sure you'll find some Pics.

David Vizard's 1999 book about building small-block Chevy engines on a budget has a section on the Vortec heads. He agrees that the stock intake port is hard to improve on, but he also says the exhaust port needs a different treatment from what's normally done on a non-Vortec head. If you can figure out Google Books, it's on page 87.

From Vizards book;

Because the stock valve pocket form is so good, little will be gained from pocket porting. Curve #3 was so close to curve #2 that (ported vs stock on the flow chart) that it virtualy coincided."

He goes on to say that there is some gain to be had from a combination of full porting and adding bigger valves. But they flow extremly well in stock form. Personaly I wouldnt even bother, install and enjoy.

I respectfully disagree with the people saying not to port the vortec heads.
They are production quality castings that respond well to basic porting.

Here's some pictures of vortecs I did recently, hope this helps

Pretty. Just curious, did you do A-B flow tests?

Thanks!

Improvements are confirmed with et and mph clocks at the drag strip. I don't
have access to a flow bench.

Based on what others are saying, production vortec heads flow ~220 cfm on
the intake side, with proper porting they can exceed 260 cfm. Gains we
see at the drag strip are in line with this.
