Pull one valve cover. Shine a light down into the cam valley area. Roller cam has lifters and guides along with a large stamped "spider" that holds things together.Roller cam also has shorter pushrods.

Remove valve cover, loosen rocker, remove a push rod and measure it. Standard flat tappet pushrods are 7.794". If they are shorter then you have a roller. Keep in mind retro-rollers use a shorter than OE roller pushrod.

While you are in there with the vavle covers off. Check the cylinder head casting number. I bet they are not vortec heads and you don;t got a vortec motor.

I bet itsa older TBI motor with TBI swirl port heads.

L-31 Vortec heads have a casting number ending in 906 or 062.

Although the name Vortec has been used for GM engines prior to the L-31 casting, the head improvements that the L-31 brought were not incorporated until 1996. Unless the heads were changed to the post '96 Vortec heads, I have to agree that you probably have the swirl port heads.
