Post Vortec Heads

Has anyone tried Vortec heads on an SBC 400? I had the heads drilled for the steam holes, but I'm still a little apprehensive since the 400s reportedly ran hot and the Vortecs are a light casting. Compression will be about 10:1 with an Comp Cams Extreme Energy 268. Nothing exotic. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I built a sbc 400 about two years ago with the vortec heads and the xtream energy 268 and it is a torque monster. Never had any trouble with it overheating or anything.

does you 400 have flat top, domed or dish pistons. Your 400 originally came with 76 cc heads and i have a set of vortec heads that have 65 cc chambers. I don't know that all vortec heads are the same but if yours are also 65 cc it will raise your compression ratio and you may have to use race gas. Other than that they should work fine. A thin Casting means less machining.

The pistons are slightly dished TRW forged. The compression (per the book) should be just below 10:1. I've since changed blocks and the block I'm going to use was decked to 9.010. My main concern was that the Vortecs are light castings. If they are a problem I'd like to know now so I can sub in some other 64cc heads.

I used 30cc dished pistons for a compression ratio of about 9.25/1 with a decked block. Just run regular unleaded through it, have good vacuum and a slightly lumpy idle.
