Post Vortec heads

Okay, Bullheimer, you have my attention, which HRM article was this in, I ususally try to watch for articles on mini-mouses, but I didn't think they had written one since the Pilgrims came over on the Mayflower. Anyway, I'm fascinated by the Vortec cylinder head deal. I was ready to buy a NOS set of ported 292 Turbo Heads, know anyone that would like a set of these?

Chevy High Performance mag runs a vortec head build up just about every other month. Get some back issues, they are plentiful.

But I can give you the formula: Vortec heads (no modification), Edelbrock RPM or Air Gap intake. Zero deck the block, 9.5:1 to 10.3:1 hyperutectic pistons preferably D shaped valve reliefs. 5.7" rods clevite777 bearings, CompCams XE268H cam, springs, lifters, windage tray, ARP bolt set. Self aligning 1.52 or 1.6 rockers. Holley 670 Avenger or 750 carb. You must build in a very thin quench area, so do your math very carefully. You want not more than .040 quench down to .025 to eliminate predetonation. This will make a high 300's hp motor. With a single plane intake and dyno tuneing it would go to 425hp.

But if you want excitement, build it as a 383!

what more could i tell you?

the 283 vortec deal was already posted correctly as last augusts' sbc combos; the vortec 350 w/a performer then a super victor was in the junkyard jewel issue back in august 1999 at 394 and 400HP respectively w/a comp cam xtreme energy 224/230, 470/480. other then those i dunno what the heck engine/article i was blithering about.
ps. im all over that excitement thing. but then you lose your "expendability" -abilty to just throw out a blown engine and replace it with another junker. but your 383 should last forever anyway so why not only thing is it will cost some to get the rotating assembly and have the block relieved.
