vortec heads and egr

My question is about vortec heads. Im thinking of getting a set , but they dont have a heat riser passage. Also I dont see any catalogs selling 4 barrel intakes with egr. So how do i use these heads and still pass a smog test? The smog guy is going to see no egr. My truck is a 85. I live in CA. It came with a carb.

Check with S.E.M.A. and see if there are any exemptions that may be applied to low mileage vehicles or specialty vehicles. The state doesn't like to make any exemptions well known for fear of peopl using them. Be prepared to jump through hoops.

If that fails, get an older car or just leave the state.

Last time I check they had a egr setup! Are you sure your looking at the right heads.
GM Performance web site has all the info. Also Summit. If you can't find it call them.

the GMPP catalog has intakes with EGR for vortec. I'm running one (blocked off) in my boat. I also have the same intake without EGR. One is cast saying "volvo penta" and the other is from a GM crate engine.

Do you need to SMOG, if so Vortec heads are not legal in California for vehicles prior to 1996. Lots of guys get nailed at the tech inspection and have to take 'em off.

Edlebrock used to see a Vortec to carb intake with EGR, you might find one on the used market.

For exhaust you need a GMPP #12557828 Left side Vortec manifold which has a tap for a fitting which is GMPP #12552329 that connects a tube GMPP #10220275 to the intake for EGR.

Most of the Vortec conversion stuff for the street has dried up since GM never bothered to get a CARB exemption for the Vortec heads. California having been the biggest market that also required EGR, when GM failed to get a CARB sticker, the modified engines couldn't get past the tech inspection to even get to an emissions test, so the market dried up.

If you can find the stuff on Ebay and mount it on your truck you still have the inspector to get thru and the external EGR plumbing is a dead giveaway.

If you root around the aftermarket, you can find heads with Vortec chambers that fit your existing intake with its EGR.

You are right, curtis, I found a minifold with egr in the gmpp catalog @ $270. But I thought Vortec heads didnt have a heat riser passage. Does that mean you need to pipe it as bogie discribes? Sounds like a lot of hassle just for a set of heads. Plus like bogie said it wont look legal.
