Vortec Heads worth it with a regular towing cam
Building a 355 former TBI 350 for an 82 Regal, been junk-yarding and found a set of Vortec 906'. My question is it worth it to pay to have these cleaned and fluxed to use with my regular cam, an MTC-1 (.420/443 lift)? I don't want to spend extra money on springs or getting them cut down for a big lift cam or anything like that.
I hear they're worth an extra 50 horspower over the standard 193 TBI heads that were on the engine I'm building. I just want something that will get up and go a little better than this engine did when it was in a C1500. Thoughts? |

Seeing as how the TBI heads were the worst-flowing heads chevy ever made, and the Vortecs are the BEST-flowing heads they ever made for the SBC, then yes, it will be a great upgrade. You'll need the proper intake though.
Consider some of the aftermarket Vortec iron heads. They are only a marginal amount more expensive then stock but they have thicker decks and are already set up for more lift. ... But at your current lift, stock Vortecs will be fine. Stock springs can take up to .470" lift. Also, don't listen to the hype about stock Vortecs cracking. They are slightly more prone to cracking but not as bad as everyone says they are. |

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately they do sometimes crack. My guy at the machine shop found a crack on the exhaust seat on one of my 906 and he showed me a crack on someone else's 062.
I know about the intake so I'm considering buying one of the intake/carb kits from summit. $575 for intake, carb, gaskets hardware etc., this is my 2nd engine build and it's starting to get expensive! |
