Vortec question

I have a '98 Chevy vortec motor. How can I determine if this motor is internally or externally balanced?

Is the engine a 350, 4.3L V6 or a big block?

Also, if the flywheel and/or harmonic damper has a counterweight(flywheel) or a recessed area on the backside(damper) it's externally balanced. Some engines had a combination of both. GM got really screwy with the small block before they finally killed it.

The engine is a 350 but did not have a flexplate or flywheel when I purchased it. I bought the motor minus intake, distributor, and flexplate a couple of months ago and am getting ready to put it back together. I will check the harmonic damper today.

It`s a half n half, to put it another way, the front of the crank is internally balanced, the rear is externally balanced. When chevy went to a 1 piece rear main seal, the crank flange was made perfectly round and no where to put the counterweight needed to fully internally balance it, so the balance had to be added to the flexplate. When you place it back together and your using the same balancer, make sure the trigger ring is behind it, if the trigger ring on the crank was removed the balancer will be further back on the crank snout and the crank pully won`t line up with the rest.
