Hi! How are you setting the ignition timing? Was it popping like that before you changed the timing? I have a motorhome with a 454 too, but has carb. Mine will still run ok even if the timing is pretty far off, but it will pop thru the carb sometimes if the timing is too retarded. I personally like to retard the timing a little when I am going down the road on a trip, and then advance it a bit when I am in town. Seems to run more relaxed on the highway with less advance.

thanks for the feed back. timing was 13 degrees retarded, in the end did timing by driving and adjusting to best setting then never rechecked timing.it was popping and only able to run at half throttle did timing and thought it was fixed my bad. Injectors seem to be spraying way to much fuel to were it was running off carb flaps. Would msd ingnition help? 4.5 mpg is killing me

if it's running rich then it will be using more fuel. You need to fix that before you do anything else.

Also 13 degrees retarded is approximately 40 degrees from where a Stock BBC likes to run. You need to be in the area of 30 degrees ADVANCED. If the computer is retarding the timing this much and there is a rich condition I would look into your knock sensor. If the computer is recieving a knock signal then it will retard timing and add fuel until the knock stops. If it is an early system then it can be confused by other vibrations in the engine (rod knock, lifter noise, a loose belt tensioner bracket....just about anything.)

If there is no knock signal, then you need to look into the other sensors that tell the engine how much fuel and timing is required, TPS, MAP (and/or MAF), 0xygen sensors, ECT, and so on...if the system never goes into closed loop operation it will run very rich.
