Wally Phillips - RIP

http://www.radiohof.org/newstalk/wallyphillips.html

As a pre-teen I used to hide away in my room all night building "hot rods" out of Revelle plastic models and listening to Wally Phillips out of Chicago on WGN. I still have some of those models, and when I look at them Wally's music, banter, and crazy (for the time) antics come flooding back. He was always a gentleman on the airwaves...and had a huge audience throughout his career as both a daytime and evening DJ/host on WGN. His radio voice is forever ingrained in my memories of growing up.

Down here in the South we used to have to wait until late night/early morning to get the GOOD D.J.'s and Wally was one worth staying up and waiting for.

Another one of the "Good" Chicago area DJs of that era was Dick Biondi. I don't think he was ever at a "50,000 watt clear channel" station like Wally Phillips so Biondi never had quite the national audience as Wally did. But I bring up Biondi because during my very first "real job", after getting my education, I had the distinct pleasure of working with Dick's wife who was an attorney in Chicago. I only met Dick once, at a party, and by then the heyday of the old fashioned rock n' roll DJ's was beginning to fade. But it was still quite an experience to be in the same room with one of the legends.
