I need, well, would very much like, to get an original picture of a hotrod with permission to alter it and publish it on lxer.com with a story. No payment is involved, just a footnote with credit on a tiny, specialized news portal site.

Neither of my own projects is fit to use (both stuck in the sand, sand, sand stage) and free photos I've found on the Internet are all factory touch-up things.

I'm looking for something that really says 'hotrod!' that I can stick Tux http://www.isc.tamu.edu/~lewing/linux/ or some derivative on, in, or under the hood. Tux sitting by or on the engine in the car in the hotrodders.com logo with a wrench and grease stains is something like what I imagine, only with flames and a ratfink-style shifter and oversized slicks like the Defibrilator (sp?). I'm no artist, so any other ideas are very much welcome.

Anybody got something you don't mind sharing?

I'm not sure it would say "hotrod" to you, or to others, but you are welcome to use any pic of the "rat on a shoestring" from my journal. It's sort of a child of the internet anyhow, having had it's entire birth and creation documented here on HR.Com.

woohoo! Thanks, Cboy! Being a child of the Internet makes the "rat on a shoestring" fit the purpose even better, since Linux is also a child of the Internet. I will post a link here when the article is published on LXer, so you can see how I embarassed the Rat.

I have a warped view of the world, but there are a lot of parallels in hotrodding and Linux. Richard Stallman started the GNU project because of all the restrictions on software, back in the early '80s. He needed a printer driver and all of them were closed source with terms he just couldn't agree to. Linus Torvalds started writing Linux because none of the operating systems he could get for his computer in '91 were good enough. Now anybody can get the parts or 'kits' or complete systems and customize them any way imaginable.

Hotrodding began pretty much as every man for himself and ended up changing the whole automobile industry. Things can still be done just as you did them with your rat on a shoestring or a person can go into a dealership and buy a car that resembles a hotrod. There is a whole slew of options in between. Same thing happened with GNU/Linux.

There is also a parallel in the fight with regulations.
