Wanting to learn more about building rods
Hi, my name is David and I recently started building a T Bucket but due to lack of drawings I had to pass it on to someone else to complete. Would it be passable to obtain drawings on vintage race cars that I can start a new project? I have also noticed that your website provides all round info from tools to paint work to workshops A-Z. This I believe will also be a great help to me, thanks.
It would be a great help to be able to get my hands on drawings that will require me to build everything from scratch body and chassis wise. I am willing to pay for a decent set of drawings. |

Wanting to learn more about building rods
Welcome to the site David. You're right when you say that there is a lot of information here. As for drawings - most of the rodders here go by the seat o their pants when building their rides. A good project journal that shows how to start with a donor vehicle and build a rod from scratch was just completed by Cboy. He has an index to each of the processes along the way or you can view it from the beginning.

Look for books..
I think the address is www.amazon.com its an on line book store....look for books on building Hot Rods, Customs or Race Cars from A to Z. Or look at www.summitracing.com as they also have a book section.

Also look on ebay. I see those rod plans on there all the time. Go to shows and look at cars. Take notes and pictures. Decide what look you like and look at the details of the cars you like. I thought I wanted a T-bucket until I sat in one.

Yep! I wanted a coupe, or roadster, until I sat in one. That is why I built a 1940 LaSalle 4 dr sedan and now stick strickly to 4drs. Nice ride, lots of room and it is much more comfortable when crusin' with your friends. Everyone gets a door of their own. Stretch out, crank up the air, mash the gas!

If you are planning to scratch build your body and chassis then Home Brew is on the money when he says most folks just go by the seat of their pants. The reason for this is that EVERY rod is different...motor, trans, wheelbase, cockpit space, etc. etc. When you scratch build you can make these things fit your own personal needs and comfort requirements. The downside is that "no one size fits all" and therefore, no single set of blueprints or plans is going to work for everyone. In addition to the link Brew provided, here's a link to my current project which takes you step by step through the building of a chassis and a body (as well as everything else in between). The only thing I don't include is measurements. And that's because everybody's final measurements for each component of the car are going to be different based on a whole series of choices you are going to make throughout the building process. One thing that helped me a lot early on in scratch building was to simply use 1/25 scale models (like Revell) to get my proportions and rough sizes down. Just use a good measuring tool on the model, multiply by 25, and you have the size for any part of the chassis or the body. It won't give you an exact replica when you are done, but it will be pretty darn close. I also use Photoshop a lot when I am planning out a new project and LOTS of graph paper. |

re: Wanting to learn more about building rods
Steve Smith Autosports has a lot of books and information on various aspects of building cars..
If I cam make a suggestion is that for your first project build an offroad go-kart like from these plans .this will give you a good indoctrination to fabricating and one of these is a lot of fun and won't take as much of your money.. Off Road Kart plans and parts.. Myself I really like the idea of that 2 seater with full suspension..That thing would be a blast around here on some of the trails.. Sam
