wants to go in reverse when in neutral

i just finally fired up my top end rebuild but i had to hold in the clutch pedal the whole time because when i took off the headers i had to take apart the safety switch and clutch linkage and some how i messed up when i reinstalled everything. at first i couldn't get the ignition turn all the way back so i could get the key out. i fixed that by moving that shaft further up that slip lock nut. but when i let the clutch out when i think or seems like it is in neutral it starts to move backwards like its in reverse!! any ideas? its a sg 4 speed

this is a saginaw manual 4 speed trans?

If you think the shifter is in neutral, you let the clutch out and the vehicle move backwards... your shift linkage is messed up and the trans is in reverse

I suggest you figure the linkage out and what you did wrong. Re-trace your steps on the linkage

shift linkage adjustment

Most shift linkage has holes that are supposed to line up with a 1/4 in drill shank. try to find neutral disconnect the rods at the trans arms. click the trans arms to make sure you are centered , each arm in neutral in neutral, insert the drill shank and adjust the shift rods until it fits.

Here is a photo another member posted in a thread about shifters.

Perhaps this will help.

Shifter is in neutral position with alignment tool (drill bit) installed
