WARNING!!! Do you have one of these?

If you have one of these mechanics seats, you need to inspect it to see if it is built like the one in the first pic. The metal frame is made in 3 parts. The front part is connected to the two curved up rights (where the seat mounts)with two plastic square bars that are pressed in to the square tubing and held in place with a screw on the bottom and a roll pin on top. These things will brake and when they do they will dump you backwards on to the floor . Can result in some very serious injury. It happened to me , it dumped me backwards on to a concrete floor, I was lucky my head hit the pillow part of a creeper that was behind me part of the plastic tray came up under my arm pit and took the hide off from my elbow to my arm pit. At my age I don't bounce real good any more.
To fix this so it could not hurt my or any one else I butt welded the frames together and capped one side and the bottom with some 1/8 th inch flat strap.
After this happened I found out other people had the same problem with this seats. So if you own one or use one at work ,check the thing out and fix it so you don't get hurt.

Thanks, I'll give mine a look-over tomorrow. I don't bounce too well either. :D

Yikes! Thanks for the heads-up.

In a while, Chet.

I think I would be putting a couple of pieces straight down under the seat too...........

Harbor Freight junk, I assume. Thanks for the "heads up".

I just sit on the tire I took off the car to work

Looks like the craftsman seat I have. Thanks for the heads up!

I have a Craftsman one too. Mine broke in the seat area, though. So I screwed a section of OSB to the bottom and it's fine now.

In a while, Chet.

Thanks, I'll check mine. I fall off of it enough anyway, I don't need it to help me fall.

only good HF is for is when you need to modify a wrench to get some hard to reach nut/bolt, or if they have something made in usa there. Once in a while they have some decent stuff, but most I wouldn't trust. Remember, if it's made in china, your dog will die, your tires will explode, you will get lead poisioning, and America's GDP will keep going down, and so will manufacturing jobs in America.

I have one of those seats also. I always had minimal concern about it breaking on me, I always sit on mine with the looped bars to the back. If it breaks then you go forward, not over backward.
Recently though after watching my brother (considerably heavier than me) sit on mine, I added two all-thread supports under the seat. Even with me it is considerably stiffer than before.

re: WARNING....Do you have one of these?
Since I made the first post about this seat I have done a little research and found out that this seat most likey came from Auto Zone but can't be postive,in the store here locally they have two different versions of the same seat, one with out the plastic inserts and one that is solid metal. Both of them are "Chinaware".The seat that broke with me was left here by a former mechanic when he left .I think I know why now.
One of the early post said that they always sat on theirs with the tray facing forward so you would fall forward if it broke. Well I have been told all my life that I could do the impossable i was setting forward on this thing and when it broke I went backwards!.If I had been setting the other way i may have got my face cut up if I had fell forward and landed on all the rotor and frame parts. But any way check'em out and be safe.

Google Pail Pal , not much like your seat but not gonna break either. A guy nearby has several hundred of them for sale I think at a lesser rate than the site. I have one in the trailer, but it's out of state so no pics. I bet HotRodders would have a new favorite after using one of these things. I got mine for nothing but find it invaluable.
