warped body panels

Hi My name is Trickie Dickie, I am a journeyman mechanic and I am restoring a 1956 mercury monarch. I took some auto body training about 40 years ago and am trying to do rust repair on my 56 from some of the memory I have left of that time in my life. I am running into issues with warpage. I don,t seem to have any problem with welding in a patch panel but I do get a small amount of warpage the problem comes when I try to straighten it. I seem to screw it up and can,t undo what I have done, it just gets worse. I am a little stubborn as well because I have a bodyman buddy who would come and do it for me but it wouldn,t be the same. Any helpful advice would be appreaciated. Thanks

Hammer on dolly your weld zone cold to get some of that shrinkage out first. This means hammer over welds with your dolly directly behind it, stretching the metal. Pushing hard on the dolly will help it raise a tad as well so it's easier to work afterwards. Do this before and perhaps a little after you grind your welds down. Once you get your shrink out and it's level, then block the metal with 180 in one direction /////. The scratches will show you the highs and lows of the panel. Fix accordingly with hammer off dolly/hammer on dolly/stud gun, and then block in this direction\\\\\ to see where you're at. Hammer off dolly is when you hammer down a high while pushing up a low on the backside with a dolly, rolling it even. You can also grease and wax remove junk on the metal and use a marker as a guide coat but if you block like I say the scratches in the metal will tell you the same thing. In any case, deal with the shrunk areas first, then deal with the rest.
