Wash With Water?

okay i haven't worked on the mustang in a long time....like a month or two....maybe more...but im now back in the game...ive done all the metal work...and initial filler work...but its gotten sort of dirty and dusty and stuff...i always read make sure to wash the surface clean before you spray initial primer...does that mean use water on bare metal and filler and stuff? that sort of seems to go against most of what i know but hey...i guess it wouldn't be the first time ive been mislead?

If you have had bare metal sitting that long, you will need to sand it before doing any priming, to remove surface corrosion. I would wipe it down with a clean rag, before sanding. If you have uncovered filler, you really don't want to use any chemicals to clean it. I don't like to leave any filler not covered for any length of time, just for that reason.

okay so this is really my question...after sanding (filler or primer) and before painting....what do you do to get the dust and stuff off? ive heard people use water and soap before which sounds sort of crazy...or do i just get a rag and gallon of degreaser and wipe it down....?

The stuff we use is called wax and grease remover. Yes, I also wipe with water but, not much. Just wipe it with a damp cloth, then blow it all off with compressed air. Then wet a clothe with cleaner wipe a panel to get it wet then take a clean clothe and wipe that panel dry. Continue to the next panel. you'll notice that the drying clothe is what removes most of the contamination. just wiping it all wet and not drying it will not get the car clean. That's my opinion.
