Water flow

On a 302 ford with a standard flow water pump, which way does the coolant flow to the heater? From the water pump through the heater to the block or the opposite way?

Should flow from the block to the core, then to the pump. When in doubt remember that on standard-flow engines (not pumps since even reverse rotation pumps still flow the coolant in the same direction) coolant flow goes pump, engine, stat, upper hose, rad, lower hose, pump. So the water in the heads/manifold is the last thing before the stat. Since the stat always makes a restriction, water is sourced between the pump and stat to supply the core, and then it returns between the stat and pump (or in the pump itself.)

That way the water is always sourced before the restriction and returned after it to ensure flow through the core

Water flows from the stat to the radiator down to the water pump, and is circulated trough the engine until the stat opens again and dumps back into the top of the radiator.
