Water pump

My 81 grand prix wit a 3.8 l v6 has been overheating for a long time then when it gets a certain temp and u turn the motor off it will pop..could the water pump be pumpin weak and cause the rad hose to swell then buildin alot of pressure causing the pop?

I doubt it, I would first change the T-stat out, then give it a try.

Replace the radiator cap. Make sure the pressure rating is oem spec. If that don't work, verify that the cooling fan is coming on. If they aren't, start with the coolant temp sensor. If that's good go to the fan relay. If it's good check for power at the fans connection to the harness. If you have power there you may need a new fan motor. Remember that the you'll not see power anywhere unless the engine is hot enough to make the ecu turn them on.

Alright I changed the rad cap and the thermostat. It would still overheat then when I turn the engine off it pops real loud. I also checked the timing with a light and the fan is not electric
