Water Pump by pass hose restriction

Hi, My car is a 1970 Monte Carlo BBC, i am in the process of replacing the water pump with a new one. In the past i have read on this BB that the (sometime called the thermostat by pass hose or heater by pass hose). should have a restriction in it for better cooling. Can any one tell me the size of this restriction and what could it be made out of ? The hose is 3/4 inch hose. Thanks Old Bill T
