Angry Water pump problems leaving me with questions

I noticed today that when I turn the HVAC knob to either Vent or HTR (just the floor), I get a nasty rattling noise. It didn't do this when I left this morning, but started when I left for lunch. I popped the hood and it seems it's coming right from the water pump which leads me to believe soem type of bearing is going out. The engine is a 3100 SFI V6. Here's the thing though, why would the sound only be around whent he AC was not on? That doesn't make sense to me. Anything else I should check?

Also, when I put the new pump on, what else should I do while I'm in the engine. I think I'll just take Saturday (and maybe Sunday) and get some work done on my car. I'm going to flush the whole system before I change the pump and then I'll run some water through it once or twice more more to get anything else out. I'll also probably change the t-stat and maybe clean the top end of the engine. Anything else you guys can think of that I should do (besides wash my engine!)?

Are you sure it's not the blower motor transmitting noise through to the water pump?
Harmonics have a nasty way of doing these things.

I don't think it's the blower motor. I got out of my car and took a look around under the hood. The water pump was REALLY hot and the car had not been running but a few minutes which would lead me to believe something is going wrong internally.

Okay, popped the hood last night and got a better listen. I don't think it's the coolant pump. It sounds more like it's coming from below the pump which is where the AC compressor is located. So is that a job I'm going to have to leave to a dealer or shop?

Sounds like the compressor pump clutch is on it's way out, the free wheel bearing is likely shot. You can buy just the clutch if that is what is wrong.

Thanks Chuck! That's kind of what I was thinking also. How hard is it to change out? In talking with another guy, he said special tools were needed.
