waved plate

My question is about the waved steel plates. What is the purpose of the waved plate in the clutch packs? Can the waved plate be replaced with a steel followed by a friction or is the waved plate necessary? I want my 400 to shift as hard as possible and have purchased a cheetah turbo action reverese pattern manual valve body and a b&m master overhaul kit. I have a haynes manual for the 400. I want to be sure on the clutch packs before reassembly. I know transmission work should probably be left to the pros but I want to do it myself and have a hard shifting 400 or learn from my mistakes. Any advice on clutch pack setup would be appreciated. Thanks
