Weekend Update 4/4/04

Well this weekend I got my firewall done.
I had to actually 'tub' my firewall to clear the tires when my truck is completely laid-out....LOL!
Me and a buddy did some measuring yesterday and I came up with some reference points as to how LOW my truck actually is.
#1 Doors are 1/4" off the ground(read that NO rocker panels)
#2 Rear tires will be 3" taller than the bed
#3 Front tires may not clear the hood( its gonna be very close)
#4 Cab roof is "stomach" high
#5 Hood is "knee" high
#6 When truck is laid-out I still have about 6" of travel left in the rear
#7 I am insane to build something like this!!!
Here are some pics of where it is right now. I am going to try to get a motor/trans dropped in it soon, that way I can deal with whatever other clearance issues I may have. I am also gonna try to get my bed finished up and back on the truck very soon.
Later,
WEIMER(those aren't Dockers Larry!

Is that going to be the same width of your final tires/rims in the front? I've seen a few S-10's and Rangers while changing tires that went to wider wheels and scraped the turns. We voided the warranty on some 245's in the front. The guy scraped them down to blow and brought them back the next week. We just laughed.

Just be sure that whatever you decide to go with will clear, not just those little stockers.

Lookin' good man. You've done SO much to that thing, it doesn't even deserve an S-10 badge on it anymore. Barely a chevy one. Dude, you need to come up with a WIEMER badge to put on it.

The tires that I have on it now are 15" big-n-littles....I would have to run a 13" low profile tire to NOT scrape anything on the tire. The tire diameters will mimic the 18"/20" wheels that I will be running later on. The only time that they will scrape anything will be when the truck is completely laid flat...obviously I will not be able to drive it when it is at that point. But at ride-height everything will clear better than when it was stock.
The front tires are 25" tall and the rears are 28" tall
....And the comment about slotcars having more clearance...that is no lie, you can't slide a credit card underneath

I have to ask....Whats the point of all this?

Any vehicle that is 1/4 in off the ground is impossible to drive and illegal. I supose that it's going to have an airbag or some other kind of adjustable suspension, but I still don't get it.

Maybe, I'm just an "Old Fart" who doesn't understand......lol

BTW. I do appreciate the work done, just don't understand...............

Well I'll try to answer a few of your questions....
It is (hopefully) obvious that you cannot drive something 1/4" off the ground. Although it doesn't sit 1/4" off the ground...it sits flat ON the ground. Its isn't illegal everywhere to have an adjustable suspension. Yes it is going to have an airbag suspension. 10" of adjustment in front and 12" of adjustment in rear.
I am glad that you appreciate the work and No you wouldn't understand until you, yourself gets bitten by the bug. I am building this to prove a point to myself and other people that I can do 100% of the work myself. I wouldn't neccesarily say that you are an "OLD FART"...I would just say that you may be a little Old Fashioned when it comes to rides....not that its a bad thing...but That is what you get when different generations meet each other.
Keep on Keepin' on!

WEIMER

Ponch-

Forget about the "Old Fart" comments. I'll be one in a few years. LOL For now, refer to me as New Fart.
Anyways, its a fabrication expirement/excercise. Its also engineering a "better wheel". Like the Bigfoot phenomenon of "our" youth, the opposite is appearing. Look at the car shows. All the Old Skool rods are now "bagged" and sit on the ground at the shows. When they're ready to leave, its "Elevator Up", and they're ready to go. Just a different stroke, fro different folks. Remember what your parents said, when you started Hot Rodding? We are becoming our parents. Well, not me, cause I REFUSE to grow up. Growing old is inevitable, growing up is not an option!
