the larger blowers have a pop off so if the engine loads up with fuel (2 carberators) and it back fires, it wont blow the blowwer off the engine. the small cid units usally only have one carb so its not such a big problem
I think he's talking about the blow out plates on a blower, when a backfire occurs it splits the panel apart.
Very expensive and must be replaced after some good hard runs.
A check valve that Holly & BG has in their carb's and has a kit for the older one's.
It stops the power valve from blowing out.
In all these years I never had one go bad.
OR is he talking about the blower of Hollys other company.
Pop Valves are used on Race blower that are producing high amounts of boost. This is done to prevent damage to the Carburetors, Injectors, and/or the blower itself.
This is not done on the smaller blowers for a few reasons:
1) Cost
2) Since the majority of the smaller blowers are used on street cars, and marine applications it would not be safe to have the fuel, and possible fire in the engine compartment.
3) Most of the smaller blowers use a serpentine style belt which will slip during a backfire, preventing damage to the blower.
So should I add a pop off to my blower set up to save the rotors. I am using a serpentine belt to drive it, but I cannot afford to have the blower damaged. I just spent a ton of cash to have this blower rebuilt by ***eol Superchargers
Do you run Nitrous with the 250 , or have you had a backfire?
I am leaning towards getting a pop off plate to be safe but I really dont want to unless I have to because if I do I have to machine and weld($) a solid chunk of aluminum which mean I have to sub it out and also buy a drill press.....
I recommended it if you want to be safe. Whats good for one motor may not be good for another. Like you said you just had it rebuilt, if you have the money go for it.
Wait for someone else to give a reply or check with the repair shop and check on what they recommend, or with Holly.
It looks like you are using a different blower also.
To be safe I would go with it since you had the problem all ready.
To put a plate in the blower is much more money, they are cut to blowout in a certain pattern, they tend to stretch after a while and can blow after a while.
We had this problem on our Top Alcohol dragster, now A/Fuel.
But then again its a different type of application.
The pop-off would do the job then go with that.
Just a small Nitrous Works kit between the carb and top of the blower set at 300HP.
I've only had one or two backfires through the blower when I was first setting it up on the Dyno. Never since then.
The only time you should ever have a backfire through the intake would be if the engine is too lean. That being the case if your carburetor is tuned properly, and the engine is up to operating temp before you try to get on it you shouldn't have any problem with that.
Well I just ordered a small backfire plate kit from bds next day air.
Running nitrous on this blower at 12 psi will be in my opinion very dangerous should a backfire occur.
So now Ive got my work cut out for me big time. Wish me luck!
GOOD LUCK, and a good decision on the plate,
better safe than sorry.
Nice pics of the motor, a lot of work and $$$$ all ready into it. How about some pics in the photo album on this site of the rest of the car and setup.
