Post Weight of 454 engine

Does anyone know the weight of a 454 Chevy engine, preferably with aluminum heads? I need to use my hoist at the extended position which indicates a max of 500 lbs.

There are some "engine weight" sites on the web, most of which seem to be copies of each other. These quote the BBC as weighing 685 lbs. with iron heads. I don't think aluminum heads would drop it anywhere near 500.

BBC

A iron headed big chevy weighs 685 lbs.

I think you are going to be over even with the aluminum heads.

Yeah, I guess 685 is the number. I'll have to pull the boom back a notch on the hoist.

doesn't that figure account for cast iron exhaust and intake manifolds? Take those off and you're down another 80-100 pounds. So probably around 540 pounds right?

I think you'll be fine-

That's a good point. I hadn't thought about that.

I'm not breaking any new ground with this engine swap, so I think I'll just put the car up on jack stands so that the legs on the cherry picker will clear the lower A-arms and set the boom back a notch to be on the safe side. I have to jack the car up anyway to put the tranny in.
