weird power steering

oh got a question on my power steering...m 86 grand am sometimes seems like it has a mind of its own...last friday when i parket it the power steering was just fine..alil tight in the left side but workable..this morning i got in to find that it wasnt working...so i pop the hood and check the fluid levels..its empty! so i fill it up and the steering is tight for about five minutes then it getseasy to turn agan and then goes back to normal...im thinking that a bad power steering pump might do this? is this right? my other thought it needs a front end allignment and im wondering if this could be contributing as well? thanks ahead of time,
GOTH

Other than the the fluid leak, this is very common for an older GM product. It is the steering rack causing the stiff steering, called GM morning sickness. Do you know where the fluid leak is? Fix the fluid leak and replace the rack and you should be all set, also align the front end after the rack replacement. If you cant find a fluid leak, look inside the dust covers covering the inner tie rod end, this can hold fluid without leaking on the ground

morning sickness

Morning sickness can sometimes be fixed with a system flush. Doesn't always work. Pays ur money, takes ur chances.
